Pre-Dentistry Track
Are you interested in dentistry? You can definitely prepare well for dental school at UNA. Keep in mind that admission to U.S. dental schools is highly competitive. Interested students should reach out to the Pre-Health advisor or visit the websites of individual dental schools (please do NOT call the schools) for specific prerequisite information. Typically required courses include:
- Biology (12 semester hours)
- General Chemistry with lab (8 semester hours)
- Organic Chemistry with lab (8 semester hours)
- General Physics with lab (8 semester hours)
- Mathematics (6 semester hours;analytic geometry and differential and integral calculus are recommended)
- Non-Science Courses (30 semester hours)
While majoring in science is not mandatory, completing the pre-dental science requirements is essential. It is recommended to have an undergraduate degree as preparation for dental school. Most dental students have obtained their undergraduate degrees before enrolling in dental school.
Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
Take the DAT at least a year prior to seeking admission to dental school. This standardized test measures general academic ability, comprehension of scientific information and perceptual ability. Completion of at least two years of college-level courses in biology and general and organic chemistry is recommended before taking the DAT. For more information on the DAT, click .
Applying to Dental School
Most dental schools require personal interviews to assess qualities such as a candidate's desire to help others, self-confidence, ability to face challenges, interpersonal skills, and capacity to work independently. The interview also allows candidates to ask questions about the school.
It's advisable to apply for admission at least a year before your intended enrollment date. Most dental schools are part of the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS).
